The Wright Brothers and the FLYER
Orville and Wilbur Wright are 2 mechanical engineers who approach the beginnings of aviation like real scientists. They observe, measure and develop the foundations of the mechanics of flight. First on kites, gliders … then lead to the line of FLYER. They created the first planes piloted on the 3 axes: pitch, roll and yaw. On December 14, 1903, the FLYER flew to Kitty Hawk in North Carolina (USA) in a straight line. Quickly, the Wright brothers manage to make turns and then return to their starting point. Obsessed with protecting their invention and spending their energy on the problems of patent disputes, the Wright brothers did not participate enough in the rapid development of aviation and their concept was quickly outdated.
The FLYER: The Wright brothers built the first airplane able to fly with its own energy, to make turns and to be truly flyable. The first, called FLYER, flies only in a straight line and proves to be very difficult to pilot, in particular because of a very sensitive depth (pitch). The FLYER 2 remains very difficult to master but makes real turns and returns to its starting point. It is the FLYER 3 which makes it possible to carry out real flights (39 minutes) and to be more easily controlled. Finally, the FLYER Model A can carry a passenger and the Wright brothers can demonstrate to the whole world the advance of their invention.
