Charles Lindbergh and the Spirit of Saint Louis
Charles Lindbergh was an American pilot, the son of Swedish immigrants. He was soon drawn to aviation and became a pilot for the US AIR Mail. Lindbergh decides to attempt the Atlantic crossing after a $25,000 reward is offered to the first man to achieve the feat. For this, it uses a modified RYAN aircraft to increase its fuel range. To do so, he sacrifices comfort and visibility towards the front of the aircraft, which has no windscreen! Using a rudimentary lateral periscope, he flew all the way to Le Bourget airfield near Paris! The 33-hour flight made him a worldwide hero, and opened up immense possibilities for the fledgling commercial aviation industry. The aircraft was christened “Spirit of Saint Louis” in recognition of the city’s many donors.
Charles Lindbergh would remain deeply involved in the development of aviation. Unfortunately, his notoriety earned him to see his son Charles III kidnapped and murdered. His stance against US involvement in the Second World War made him suspect of sympathy for the NAZI ideology.
