Jean Mermoz, the Aéropostale and the Laté 300 “Croix du Sud”
Jean Mermoz was one of the emblematic pilots of the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale created by a visionary and passionate engineer: Latécoère. Mermoz, a flamboyant and charismatic character, participated in the development of air mail in Africa and then in South America. Saint Exupery’s friend disappeared at sea during a transoceanic crossing on December 7, 1936. After a first departure, he had to return to have a faulty propeller checked. After a second departure, he simply announced over the radio “let’s cut the right rear engine”… the plane and the bodies of the crew were never found.
The Laté 300 Croix du Sud: Built in a single copy, the Laté 300 took off in 1931. The seaplane equipped with 4 engines was able to reach Marseille to Saint Louis of Senegal nonstop, thus beating all records!
