The BOEING 314 CLIPPER
Designed during the 1930s, the BOEING 314 was the largest civilian aircraft to fly. PAN AM asked BOEING to produce a transatlantic aircraft capable of carrying passengers quickly and safely. In 1939, the commercial operation on the South and North Atlantic routes began. With the arrival of the war, PAN AM had to turn to a Pacific operation, as the Atlantic routes were no longer exploitable.
With 4 star engines of 14 cylinders, the BOEING 314 had 6400 HP allowing it to cruise at more than 300 KM/H. It carried up to 77 passengers by day and 40 by night (the seats reclined for better comfort).
Churchill or Roosevelt used the Clipper in their travels around the world.
If PAN AM was the main civilian operator of this aircraft, it sold a few examples to the US Navy and the US Air Force which used them in the Pacific.
