Program:
The American space shuttle project was born at the end of the 1970s. It is the only machine that has been able to take off like a rocket and return to earth like an airplane. The shuttle is therefore reusable and can be used to place satellites in orbit, repair them, and even bring them back to earth. They were used in a wide range of mission types.
7 shuttles have been built in total: Enterprise, Pathfinder, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour
Pathfinder and Enterprise never flew in space: Pathfinder was a full-scale model used to validate all maintenance and shuttle movements. Enterprise was used to validate the shuttle’s ability to glide and land like an aircraft. It was dropped in flight from a Boeing 747.
Unfortunately, the loss of the shuttles Challenger (a few seconds after the takeoff) and Columbia (during the return in the atmosphere) signed the stop of the program. In each of these accidents, the totality of the crew is dead and NASA is questioned in its management of the incidents preceding the accident.
The last flight took place in 2011 and the remaining shuttles are displayed in American museums.
