Chuck Yeager and the Bell X-1
Charles Edwood “Chuck” YEAGER was early in his career a WWII Fighter Pilot Officer. Credited with 13 victories, he was then famous because he was the first pilot to acquire the status of AS in a single day … 5 victories on the same day! After the war, he became a test pilot and on October 14, 1947 became the first man to cross the sound barrier aboard the Bell X-1 called GLAMOROUS GLENNIS, named after Chuck YAEGER’s wife. The day before, the pilot had broken 2 ribs due to a fall from his horse. He had had to hide his pain and … a piece of broomstick to be able to compensate for his inability to raise his arms to close the cockpit of the plane!
Chuck Yeager continues his career and becomes General. He passed away in 2020 at the age of 97.
The BELL X-1: The profile of this aircraft was inspired by 12.7 caliber bullets whose cannon exit speed is supersonic. We simply added wings (small) … The plane was not able to take off from an aerodrome. It was dropped in flight by a modified B29. It was part of the line of X-planes developed jointly by the US Air Force and NACA (ancestor of NASA). It was powered by a rocket engine running on a mixture of ethanol and liquid oxygen.
